Episode 2: Couch Surfing
Behind The Scenes
You’d be surprised at how much time it takes to put these things together! The first episode probably took me 30 hours, and this one around ten. We’ll see if I can maintain quality while improving speed.
I get a lot of mail talking about how lucky I am to be on this radical vacation – how fun it must be getting away to the other side of the planet. The truth is, while it is a lot of fun, this is hardly a vacation.
This is an adventure.
What does that mean? Dictionary.com tells us that a vacation is “a period of suspension of work, study, or other activity.” An adventure, on the other hand, is “a bold, usually risky undertaking; hazardous action of uncertain outcome.”
Fun? Yes! Relaxing suspension of work? Absolutely not. If anything, I’ve had more “problems” to deal with since I’ve gotten here than I ever had back home. I use quotations because we usually think of problems as things in the way of what we want. In my case, the challenges I face are my means of locomotion to a new state of mind.
That isn’t to say I’m stressing out or becoming a nervous wreck; I don’t choose to handle challenges in this manner. I still have time to visit beaches, catch rays, and breathe the clear air of the South Pacific. I just have to balance it with making sure I have a place to sleep. As someone who rarely did much work back home, resting after a long day is a better reward than any vacation offers.
I don’t know about you, but I’m ready to see what Australia looks like from the other side of the lens. The next episode is all about what sort of conditions a low-budget, camera-toting traveler sees while abroad. If you’ve never done much low-budget travel, you might be surprised at the human connections you’re missing, sitting up in those expensive hotels.
Prepare to be educated. See you next episode!

good job, mate. the vegamite part was priceless because of the oblivious tourists caught on camera (on your left by the window) who never moved, blinked or even exhaled.
no one is more proud of you than me. you’ve come a long way, baby.

The legend of Trent. Dude, let’s talk production for a second; this episode was 3,000 times better. And you apparently cut it in 33.3% of the time. Granted, it was a shorter video. I think.
You’re in freakin’ Australia and I’m marveling at your video skills.
Keep rockin’. I’m presenting a segment on your adventure at an Honors Council Conference in St. Petersburg, Florida.

Harry:
That’s really interesting. This video is actually over a full minute longer than the last one. Time flies when you’re listening to groovy music.
Niven:
At first I thought they were asleep, but by the end I think you see their eyes open. Apparently, they were robots.
Everybody Else:
Thanks guys!
